A just in case card should list things that emergency personnel or witnesses need to know in the event that you’re unconscious due to a collision. Consider a couple of questions when getting your card prepared.
Do I Need a Just in Case Card?
Maybe you usually ride in groups or have a passenger with you. Perhaps you’ve been riding for years and have never had an accident. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, and the minutes following a crash could mean the difference between surviving or not. So-it’s a good idea to have an emergency file, just in case!
Say you’re on a medication that causes your blood to be thinner than normal. You’re out enjoying a ride on a country road, and something causes another car to swerve into your lane. Suddenly you’re thrown from your bike and become unresponsive. A witness (or the person who arrives at the scene first) should know who to contact. The medical personnel who respond should know the medications you’re on and what condition you have so that they can treat you properly. If they don’t, they could waste precious time or even cause you more harm.
What Should I Include on My Just in Case Card?
- Emergency contact, like a spouse, sibling, or close friend
- Emergency contact phone number
- Medications you’re currently taking
- Any medical conditions you have
- Any other relevant information
The Bottom Line : It’s Always Better to be Prepared for Anything.
Make sure you have a just in case card stored in a storage space or in your wallet at all times. It should be laminated or protected in some way from rain and snow. You also should always have your license, registration, and insurance information with you.
Also, if you have an allergy to bees or a condition like diabetes, you should always have your medication with you.
Hopefully you’ll never need to use your just in case card, but if you do, it could save your life.
