3 Reasons Why Wearing Motorcycle Gear is a Really Good Idea

Many riders seem to think it’s ok to hop on a motorcycle and hit the highway wearing their regular street clothes. Here are 3 reasons why wearing motorcycle gear is a very good idea.

  1. Protection. Okay, this one is a gimme, but protection is something that should never be overlooked when you ride. Dress for the crash, not the ride, right? Imagine you have a belt sander, turn it on, and take it to your forearm, hip, knees – you pick the body part – sound fun? No? Not even for just a second? Well, that’s the kind of results you can expect if you go down on asphalt wearing nothing but a t-shirt. Motorcycle gear serves to protect your skin against abrasion, as well as providing impact protection in the form of armor for the elbows, shoulders, knees, and foam padding for the back and hips. Recovering from a motorcycle wreck in the proper gear can be as simple as feeling sore for a few days, versus skin grafts and that oh-so-terrible wire brush they use to clean out road rash – trust us, you don’t want to go there.
  2. Comfort. Think all that gear will be uncomfortable? On the contrary, proper gear that fits well, and is appropriate for your bike, body type, and the season, is the most comfortable way to ride a motorcycle. Mesh motorcycle gear keeps you cool and comfortable in the summer, shields you from the sun, and flows tons of air. If it’s cold or rainy, there’s gear for that, too. Sure you might sweat a little more wearing leathers in the heat of summer, but it’s better to sweat then bleed.
  3. Style. This may seem silly to some, but it’s certainly a factor. Let’s face it, when you are on a motorcycle, people stare. They wish they were that guy, out for a nice ride having fun. Why not have some cool gear that matches your bike and makes you look like the real deal? Plus, there are other riders out there who will asses what type of rider you are by the gear you chose. Around here, show up to a group ride on your sportbike in a t-shirt and we’ll tell you to get a jacket, heck one of us will probably even lend you a spare. It’s not a judgmental thing, we just don’t want to deal with the mess if you go down without the proper gear.

So don’t be that guy, buy some gear that fits well, looks good, and will protect you in case the worst happens. And no, you aren’t immune to wrecking – no matter how good of a rider you are. Sometimes the unforeseen reaches up from the roadway and pulls us down. It could be a patch of oil, or a grandma who can’t see over the steering wheel. Whatever it is, ride prepared, and you’ll have a much better chance of getting back on a bike in short order.
