I bought my 2005 BMW F650 Dakar two years ago because I wanted to explore some of the paths less-travelled, and didn’t want to mar the finish on my HD Electra Glide Standard. Well it’s been two years and 18,000 miles on the Beemer since then, and I’ve been having so much fun on it I sold the Harley. (my riding pals couldn’t believe I did it!)
It’s my do-all machine, and I use it for highway commuting, off-roading, and long term campingtrips.
My favorite tires for it are Continental TKC80, as they hold the pavement even when wet, yet haveplenty of bite when on muddy trails. I’ve added hard saddle bags, a tank bag, extra lights, and power outlets for my GPS and heated vest. When geared up, I’m fine riding down to about 34F.
