2008 Kawasaki Ninja ZX14 Review by Bobby Lester

Allow me to introduce you to Black Betty, named after the song by Ram Jam. She is not really black, she is actually Metallic Midnight Sapphire Blue (a very pretty color, especially in the sun), but she is rock steady, and she’s always ready! “Bam-ba-Lam”

I started riding at the age of 4 on a JR50, made my motorcycle endorsement at 16, and since then I have owned and ridden many, many bikes, and this is the best out of all, sure they are some that do some things better, but most are limited to that one discipline, But the ZX14 does many things and does them all very well. If you are like me and hate to lose, you will love the ZX14.

The wife and I have ridden this bike to Myrtle Beach, SC 2-up, strait-through, she wasn’t very comfortable, I was fine, but for a blast down the mountains, she loves her pillion perch on Betty’s back. I have ridden it to Daytona Beach, FL from the mountains of SWVA, with stops for fuel and rest breaks, we made it in 10 hours (did change to concours seat for the big road), and I was still in good enough shape to hit main street and ride the evening. Not to bad for a bike that is at home on the track as it is on the street.

I bought this bike new from Swampfox Motorsports. It was actually the 1st Kawasaki they sold after purchasing the dealership from Dalton Kawasaki. I actually made the deal and ordered the bike from Mr. Dalton, and in the few days it took to arrive, he closed the deal with Swampfox. Swampfox agreed to honor the deal, and I had my new baby.

Lean angle is limited compared to the ZX6 or ZX10, but outright power and low-end torque goes to the ZX14 and on the street, bottom end is where it is at. For racing, running the mountains, and track use a proper diet was in order, so first to go were the factory exhaust-40lbs lost, then the tag bracket-8lb, and replaced the battery-7lb, so she lost 55+ pounds real easy. then came the PC III w/ custom tune, BMC Race Filter (looks as good after 25,000 miles as it did when I bought it, with reg. cleanings), and a Muzzy M14/M10, a MPS Spyder 40 shot, and a sprocket change from 17/41 to 16/43 (probably one of the best improvements made for where, and how I ride). The oil was changed to Amsoil full synthetic, Engine Ice was changed for the coolant(this stuff really works). The stock brake lines were replaced with Goodridge steel lines and EBC HH pads, front and rear. A Puigg wind screen, Projekt D radiator guard, rear spools, and a Powers Stuntworks crash bars. Topped off with Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tires, she really is a blast to ride.

She has taken me as far north as Niagara Falls, CA, and as far south as Miami, FL. I am fortunate to live 5 minutes from the Back of the Dragon, and within three and a half hours from some of the greatest roads on the east coast, she has left rubber on Deal’s Gap, the Hellbender, Cherohala Skyway, 421 The Snake, Little Switzerland, Smoky Mtns., and up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway, and many places in between. Betty is a great motorcycle, “She really makes me sing! Bam-ba-Lam!!”
