Winter Motorcycle Jacket Guide

A Cold Day in the Mountains

With the right gear and a spirit of adventure, motorcycling is a sport that can be enjoyed year round in most places.  Even when the snow starts to fall and temps creep dangerously close to single digits, I find myself throwing my leg over my bike most days.  The only thing that will really keep me in the cage for my daily commute is ice on the ground.  Other than that, I’d rather be riding!

I spent many years riding through cold weather with, shall we say, marginal gear.  It’s true, layering up underneath your summer jacket can get you through some pretty cold conditions.  But after a while putting on all those layers can become quite tiresome, not to mention cumbersome.  Then one day, I had the opportunity to ride in some cold weather in a jacket that was designed for such conditions.  All I had to wear underneath was a t-shirt, and I was toasty warm.

At Competition Accessories we carry a large selection of Touring Jackets that perform exceptionally well in cold weather.  Some of the features to look for are a nice quilted liner, waterproofing, and neck protection.  3/4 length jackets can also help keep you warm since they provide more coverage.  Below is a list of jackets that we have compiled that will serve you well this winter:

Firstgear Jaunt Jacket Closeout

First up is last year’s Firstgear Jaunt Jacket Closeout.  This jacket features a Hypertex outer shell that will keep you dry, a nice tall collar to block the wind from hitting your neck, and a price that is hard to beat.  Save over $60 off retail with this closeout!  Click the link above to see our current pricing.

Firstgear Jaunt Jacket

Don’t see a color that you like on the closeout?  The 2013 Jaunt jacket has been redesigned and is available in several different colors.  Firstgear switched from a Hypertex outer shell to their Z mid-liner – which is a waterproof layer behind the outer shell.  This will still do a great job keeping you dry, while the quilted liner will keep you toasty warm.  All this for an MSRP that is under $200!  Now on sale at CompACC for just $179.95!

Firstgear Kilimanjaro Jacket

Want some more features?  The Firstgear Kilimanjaro has been a front runner in the motorcycle jacket world for years.  The Firstgear Kilimanjaro features a Hypertex waterproof outer shell with an under the helmet rain hood that will do a great job keeping you dry.  Position-able d3O armor in the shoulders and elbows is thin and flexible, but hardens on impact for advanced energy management.  The Firstgear Kilimanjaro retails for $299.95, and is on sale at CompACC for just $269.96!

Tourmaster Transition 3 Jacket

The Tourmaster Transition 3 features a waterproof and breathable Rainguard barrier, with a 100g poly-fill zip out quilted liner.  With a retail price of $209.99, and a current sale price of just $188.99 the Transition 3 Jacket is a great value!

Tourmaster Epic Jacket Closeout

Now selling for over $50 off retail pricing, the Tourmaster Epic jacket is a great option for the budget conscious.  You’ll want to act fast though, they are selling fast at this price!  The Tourmaster Epic Jacket features a rainguard barrier, under the helmet rain hood, and a zip out quilted liner for warmth.  Click the link above to see our current sale price.

Klim Motorcycle Jackets

For the ultimate in waterproof motorcycle apparel, check out the Klim Jackets below.  Klim does things a little different than what you might be used to.  Rather than using attachable liners, they keep their jackets more streamlined and allow you to layer up underneath.  The reason they are being included on this list is because of how waterproof and durable their shells are.  Both of these jackets use Gore-Tex waterproofing to keep you completely dry, as well as breathing so you are comfortable in any conditions.  Click the pictures for more info on either jacket:

Klim Traverse Jacket – $299.99
Klim Badlands Pro Jacket $899.99

The Klim Traverse Jacket is a Gore-Tex shell designed to be light and comfortable for off-road riding.  We would recommend this jacket as a good option for those looking for protection while riding off-road or dual sport.

The Klim Badlands Pro jacket is a fully featured motorcycle jacket, complete with d3O armor and Viper Level II back armor.   This jacket is loaded with features to keep you dry and comfortable in any conditions, without the extreme bulk of many other jackets.

Sliders Quest 3 Kevlar Gear

Last but not least – the Sliders Quest 3 Closeout needs a quick mention.  These are only water resistant, so keep that in mind, but with prices well under $150, it is very hard to beat this value.  Sliders Quest 3 gear features Kevlar in the impact areas, as well as quilted thermal liners for warmth in cold weather.  The Sliders Quest 3 Jackets are a 3/4 length, with plenty of storage for long distance riders.  Sliders Quest 3 Pants have position-able CE knee armor, foam hip pads, and heavy duty construction.  These are selling quickly at these low prices – so act fast if you want a set!

  1. An impressive share, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing a little analysis on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic.
