In order to help our customers make the right choice this year for Tires we have put together a short list of the available sport touring tires and a detail about each of them. One thing to keep in mind is these tires are for the rider looking for higher mileage and still wants good wet and dry traction. Plus we have included the new Michelin Pilot Road 3 Tires and the new Conti Road Attack 2 Tires.
So first… How do you know when it is time to replace your tires? Well we have a guide to help you through the buying process. First thing is to figure out if it is time for you buy new tires. If you can answer yes to any of the following questions it is time to change them out.
- Are your tires more than 5 years old?
- Are your tread wear indicators showing at 1/32nd of an inch or less?
- Is your rear tire flat in the center?
Wondering how to check the life of your tires? It’s simple if you follow these steps.
- Look for the DOT indicator on the sidewall
- Find the 4 digit number after the DOT indicator
- The first 2 numbers are the week of the year
- The last 2 are the year
For example: 4710 means the tire was made the 47th week of 2010. Make sure when shopping for tires you look at these dates. Anything in the last 2 years is perfectly fine, as the Tire MFG. Make them in batches so they will regularly make 3 to 12 months’ worth of tires at one time. Plus the shelf life of a tire in a warehouse is about 5+ years.
Sport-Touring tires are made to be ridden on farther with a smoother ride. Tires come in different types causing tire shopping to become a very tedious task. You can choose tires meant for high speeds, tight handling, wet roads, better grip, Radial, Bias, or a long tread life. Your owner’s manual will tell you the proper size and type for you motorcycle.
Here is a list of codes and info that will better help you understand motorcycle tires:
- W-Rated = Max Speed of 168
- Y-Rated = Max Speed of 186
- Z-Rated = Speeds over 149
- V-Rated = Speeds up to 149
- H-Rated = Speeds up to 130
- Indicates the weight the tire can handle when inflated
- Numerical or Letter code depending on brand
- Will be listed on sidewall

Tri-compound Extrusion Technology – medium compound center tread with soft compound shoulders and a base that improves the bond between the tire compounds and tire carcass. Advance Variable Belt Density rear tire construction uses a densely wrapped belt in the center of the tire for stability, wear and mileage; belt is less dense on the shoulders for a large compliant, contact patch. Lifetime Profile Engineering for consistent handling and stability for the life of the tire. Super Rich Silica compound for fast warm-up and superior grip. Enhanced Aqua Flow tread pattern for optimal water dispersal. Inverted Front Grooves resist uneven wear and improves braking stability.
Bridgestone has developed the new Battlax BT-023 tyre for consistent high-level performance in both touring and sport riding. By combining good wear life and wet performance for touring, with the grip and steering control for sport riding, the Battlax BT-023 provides a wider range of choices for larger bikes. The advanced new tyre significantly upgrades the performance of the BT-021 it replaces, both in the key touring areas of mileage and wet performance, as well as by meeting the handling expectations of the most demanding sport riders. The tyre provides superb wear life and wet cornering thanks to the re-designed angle-groove pattern and Silica Rich Ex compound with “RC polymer”. Both the front and rear tyres are constructed with Bridgestone’s proven Mono Spiral Belt (MSB) technology, providing top-level grip, shock absorption and straight-line stability at speed. With a 3 Layer Compound (3LC) on the rear tyre, the shoulder compound gives reassuring grip through corners while the center compound with its wide contact area adds stability and smoothness when cruising. The result is a confident ride, with rich feedback and a secure contact feel in all conditions.
Continental ContiRoadAttack 2 ( NEW for 2011 )
Revolutionary new-to-the-market technologies to realize Continental‘s new level of grip, safety and dynamics in the radial sport-touring segment. Traction Skin, the revolutionary micro-roughness of the tread optimizes the mechanical adhesion and realizes the safest, fastest running-in time in the market. The ContiRoadAttack 2‘s New Continuous Compound-Technology is like other tires that have multiple compounds, but there is no defined lines between the soft and hard. So as you lean you get a softer compound the farther you go.. This improves mileage by using a wear resistant zenith area in the middle and safety in curves by a constantly increasing softness on higher grip shoulder area. The New Dynamic-Ride-Technology of the Conti Road Attack improves handling and control of your bike by using patented steel cord construction and a unique contour. Black Chili Compound for quick warm up, short braking distance and excellent grip on wet and dry roads.
