Alex de Angelis set the pace on the Phillip Island track today during the first free practice session for the Moto2 series. De Angelis beat out Scott Redding and Fonsi Nieto for the top spot on the time sheet.
The Moto2 riders were able to take advantage of the dry track as weather conditions continued to improve throughout the day in Australia. De Angelis set a 1’36.295 time around the Phillip Island track, beating out Redding by .017 seconds. De Angelis is coming off of his first podium finish, and looks more than capable of climbing onto the winner’s stage again.
Redding was able to take the lead in the closing laps, but a determined De Angelis was able to steal back the top spot by the end of the first free practice session.
Behind Redding came Fonsi Nieto, Julian Simon, and Andrea Iannone. Simon and Iannone are both fighting for the second place spot in the Moto2 Championship. Simon currently leads Iannone by 5 points.
